Workshop Description: Critical Race Theory provides a lens to understand race, racism, oppression, and power. In this workshop, participants will explore major Critical Race Theory tenets and discuss how the tenets relate to the music classroom. The workshop will include story-telling, discussion, and reflection on topics about race and equity. Participants will leave the workshop with age-adaptable classroom activities, a basic understanding of Critical Race Theory, and discussion prompts for further reflection.
Session 1 Goals: Engage and further understand the three tenets of Critical Race Theory through discussion and reflection. Participants are asked to reflect on what they learn in this session and how it applies to their music teaching situation. Session 2 Goals: Brief review of the three tenets of CRT, with practical and concrete application ideas for music educators. This session will include online breakout rooms. Participants are tasked with action items that they can work on to help in their personal growth. |
The April Amy Lewis Workshop on Critical Race Theory in the Music Classroom will be held as a two-part interactive webinar on 4/4/2020 & 4/11/2020, from 9:00 - 11:00 am. The cost of this new format is $15 for OAKE Members and $25 for Non-OAKE Members. There will be no additional discounts available for this workshop. Registrants will be emailed a link and password to join the Zoom webinars. 4 CPDUs are available for your participation in both of the 2-hour webinars.
