UPDATE: The April Amy Lewis Workshop on Critical Race Theory in the Music Classroom will be held as two interactive webinars on 4/4/2020 & 4/11/2020, from 9:00 - 11:00 am.  The cost of this new format is $15 for OAKE Members and $25 for Non-OAKE Members.  There will be no additional discounts available for this workshop.  Registrants will be emailed a link to the Zoom webinars.  4 CPDUs are available for your participation in both of the 2-hour webinars.  Please email chicagokodaly@gmail.com with any questions.  Click here to register online where you can pay with a credit card

Workshop Fees:

OAKE members pay a $30 fee or $100 for a 4-workshop bundle. 
OAKE members in their first 2 years of teaching after completing a teaching degree pay a $15 fee or $50 for a 4-workshop bundle, with documentation. (Email chicagokodaly@gmail.com for information.)
Non-OAKE members pay a $45 fee or $160 for a 4-workshop bundle.  
Full time undergraduate students can become OAKE members and affiliate with the CAKE chapter to attend our workshops for FREE!

Workshops will be held from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm at Concordia University, 7400 Augusta Street, River Forest, IL with the exception of the Nov. 9th workshop which will be held at Old Town School of Folk Music, 4545 N Lincoln Ave., Chicago, IL.

​Marla Butke presents Blending Dalcroze Eurhythmics Into the Music Classroom 
@ Concordia University, OPRF Room in the KCC Building

Workshop Description:  This session will allow participants to experience the core components of Dalcroze Eurhythmics. The Dalcroze approach can be effectively blended with the Kodály philosophy to enhance the preparation and practice stages of musical concept learning. Movement activities focusing on rhythmic integrity and expressiveness will be presented. Folk song applications, assessment, piano improvisation, space limitations, and classroom management issues will also be addressed.

Marla Butke, Ph.D., directs the Women's Chorale and teaches General Music and Choral Methods at Otterbein University in Ohio. Recently retired as full professor at Ashland University, she has also taught music education courses at Capital University, Xavier University, The Ohio State University, and Ohio Wesleyan University. Dr. Butke previously taught choral and general music in middle and high schools in Ohio. She holds degrees from Miami University, Wright State University and The Ohio State University. She is a Master Teaching Artist with the American Eurhythmics Society and serves as the President of the board of AES. Dr. Butke regularly presents Dalcroze Eurhythmics workshops throughout the United States and internationally, including presentations in Spain, China, and England, and for the Organization of American Kodaly Educators National Conference, the American Orff-Schulwerk Association National Conference, the National Association for Music Education Eastern Division Conference, the American Choral Directors Association National Conference and Central/North Central Regional Conference, and numerous state music education conferences. Dr. Butke was a contributing author to Women and Music in America Since 1900, and has been published in General Music Today, TRIAD, Update, The Orff Echo, and Enrollment Management. Her book, co-authored by Dr. David Frego, Meaningful Movement: A Music Teacher's Guide to Dalcroze Eurhythmics, is published by Music is Elementary.

​Gabriela Ocádiz presents Reimagining Musical Upbringings 
@ Old Town School of Folk Music

Workshop Description: This workshop is directed to community and school music teachers interested in reimagining and ideating more ways to engage musically with their students of immigrant and refugee backgrounds. Emphasis will be placed in a Kodaly-inspired pedagogy of music learning by singing, playing songs, games, and developing aural-skills all with a community development mindset.

​Gabriela Ocádiz is an active music educator, researcher and scholar. She received her Master in Music Education with Kodály Emphasis from Colorado State University (CSU) in 2015. Throughout her career, she has studied and acquired an ample variety of teaching experience in Mexico, Colombia and in the United States. Gabriela has presented academic papers and workshops in international conferences as well as in Canada. At the moment she is a PhD candidate in Music Education at Western University where she has also been working as Teaching Assistant for the courses of Kodaly Musicianship, Elementary Methods and Introduction to Music Education. Besides completing her doctorate degree, Gabriela is currently teaching Early-childhood music classes with a Kodaly approach at Forest City Talent Education (FCTE), and developing and implementing music education programs with newcomers to Canada in London, Ontario.

CAKE Board Share: Prepare, Present, and Practice

Workshop Description: Members of the CAKE Board will delve into the fundamental 3 P's of Prepare (cognitive stage), Present (associative stage), and Practice (assimilative stage).  This is a great workshop to refresh or introduce you to these key components of the Kodály sequence.  
Our CAKE Board Members have led workshops at state, regional, and national conference levels and have a varied background in training and teaching experience.  Board Member bios can be found here.

Amy Lewis presents Engaging in Critical Race Theory in the Music Classroom
@ Concordia University, Band Room in Kretzmann Hall

Workshop Description: Critical Race Theory provides a lens to understand race, racism, oppression, and power. In this workshop, participants will explore major Critical Race Theory tenets and discuss how the tenets relate to the music classroom. The workshop will include story-telling, discussion, and reflection on topics about race and equity. Participants will leave the workshop with age-adaptable classroom activities, a basic understanding of Critical Race Theory, and discussion prompts for further reflection.

​Amy Lewis is a current Future Faculty Fellow at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA. Previously she was a graduate teaching assistant at Michigan State University in music education. As a K-12 music teacher, she taught K-8 general music, beginning band, middle school choir, and jazz band in Des Plaines, IL. She received the 2019 Black Faculty, Staff, and Administrators Association Emerging Leader Award and was also named the 2015 Illinois Education Association Teacher of the Year. She is an active clinician and guest lecturer on topics pertaining to equity work. Her research interests include Critical Race Theory, antiracism education, and activism within music education.
